Dossie David Patterson, age 65, passed away on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 in Rome, GA. Born on September 11, 1951 in Fannin County, he was the son of the late Clinton Patterson and Opal Panzie Cleo Rogers Patterson. He owned and operated Patterson’s Dozer Company.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Patterson of Blue Ridge; daughters and sons-in-law, Tracy and Tony Payne of Blue Ridge and Tera and Kevin Tankersley of Blue Ridge; brothers, A.D. Patterson of Mineral Bluff and Frank Patterson of Blue Ridge; sisters, Fannie Mae Sanford of Ellijay, Barbara Ware of Blue Ridge, Wanda Cole of Blue Ridge, Maudell Southerland of Ellijay, Debra Patterson of Blue Ridge, and Lecia Lamb of London, KY; and grandchildren, Jordan Tankersley, Morgan Tankersley, Kirsten Tankersley, Gracey Tankersley, Korey Tankersley, and Kharah Tankersley.

Funeral services were conducted on Friday, January 20, 2017, at 2:00 pm from Akins Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Delmar Davenport and Tommy Ash officiating. Music was provided by the Tankersley Girls (Granddaughters). Interment followed in the Liberty Hill Methodist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Cody Akins, Mark Wade, Brandon Wright, Chris Ross, Toby Watson, and Rigoderto Flores. George Winford Watson

George Winford Watson, age 72, of Epworth, GA, passed away on Friday, January 6, 2017. Born on June 1, 1944 in Blue Ridge, GA, he was the son of the late Delmar Watson and Lois Keener Watson.

Survivors include his daughter, Elizabeth Watson of Ellijay; son, George “Buster” Watson of Cleveland, TN; three brothers, Larry (Ellene) Watson, Daniel (Jeanie) Watson, and Edwin R. Watson all of Epworth; sister, Martha Breeden of Blue Ridge; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, January 10, 2017, at 2:00 pm from Akins Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Delmar Davenport officiating. Interment followed in the Helping Hand Church Cemetery with Rev. Denny Hawkins officiating. Serving as pallbearers were: Michael Watson, Austin Watson, Adam Conner, Zeke McPherson, Johnson Foster and Joe Breeden. Nettie A. Fisher

Nettie A. Fisher, age 78, passed away on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at her residence in Epworth, GA.  She was born on February 1, 1938 in Mineral Bluff, GA, to the late Worth and Fleecy May Fisher Collins.  She retired from American Uniforms as a Machine Operator.  Mrs. Fisher had served as a pianist for many years in the community for various area churches.  Two brothers, Homer and Kenneth Collins also precedes her death.

Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Rev. Frank Fisher; two sons, Cliff (Christy) Fisher of Jasper, GA and David F. Fisher, Jr. (Net May) of  Ellijay, GA; brothers and sister-in-laws, W. C. and Judy Collins of Mineral Bluff, GA and Dewey and Gail Collins of Canton, GA; one grandson, Chad Fisher; and one great grandson, Connor Fisher.

Funeral services were conducted on Monday, January 9, 2017, at 2:00 pm from Akins Funeral Home of Blue Ridge with Rev. L.B. Adams officiating. Gladys Dillard Thomas

Gladys Dillard Thomas, age 90, passed away on Friday, December 30, 2016 in Orlando, FL. Born on March 6, 1926 in Copperhill, TN, she was the daughter of the late John Dillard and Mamie Ammens Dillard.  She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.  Her husband, Lester Thomas recently precedes her in death.

She is survived by her son, David Thomas of Orlando, FL; five grandchildren and their spouses, Debbie and David  Pillsbury, Donna and John Richard, Carla, Shane and Shianne Thomas; nine great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren; and several cousins and other relatives and friends..

DONALD (DUCK) RAY EDWING, AMERICAN GAG CARTOONIST

Mr. Donald (Duck) Ray Edwing, age 82, of Blue Ridge, GA passed away Monday, December 26, 2016.  He was born January 20, 1934 in Jersey City, New Jersey, the son of Fredrick Edwing and Helen Conway.  He was preceded in death by his wife Claire Harrington who was deceased in 20089 and his fiance Julie Brock who was deceased in 2013.  Mr. Edwing served in the US Navy on board the aircraft carrier Intrepid as a photographer and also served in the Korean War.  Mr. Edwing was a cartoonist and writer for MAD Magazine for over 30 years.  He created and wrote the comic strip Spy vs. Spy and Tales from the Duckside.  He worked on cartoons for Frank and Ernest and Horarce and Buggy.  in 2003, Mr. Edwing designed slot machines for International Game Technology, the world’s largest slot machine developer.  He was formerly of St. Pertersburg, FL and Ormond Beach, FL before moving to Blue Ridge in 2010.  He was a member of the American Legion and the National Cartoonist Society.

Don was very generous with his talent and drew several cartoons for people and businesses around Blue Ridge.  The residents of Blue Ridge will always remember Don (Duck) Edwing by his friendly and outgoing nature, his kindness and generosity and his never ending joke telling and story telling.  It was impossible to be around Don and not laugh hysterically.  He brought much needed joy and laughter to this world and lessoned peoples worries and stress if for just a little while.  With Don’s passing the laughter is a little less in Blue Ridge, GA and the world and he will not ever be forgotten.

Mr. Edwing is survived by son, Fredrick Edwing III, son, Frank Edwing, California and daughter Donna Fink, Virginia; sisters, Helen Mielo and Marilyn Ohgemach, both of Virginia, brother, Fredrick Edwing, deceased; grandchildren, Jennifer Edwing, Sean Edwing. Christal Edwing, Jamie Edwing., and Frank Edwing; stepchildren, John Hobson. Rachel Pluff, and Hanna Foutz. all of Indiana, Brad Hobson, deceased and Greg Hobson. deceased.

Mattie Garland

Mattie Garland, age 80, passed away on Monday, January 2, 2017 in Atlanta, GA. Born on March 15, 1936 in Epworth, GA, she was the daughter of the late Virgil Foster and Roxie Davenport Foster. She was a member of McCaysville Gospel Tabernacle. She is preceded in death by her parents and husband, Clay W. Garland.

She is survived by son, Doyle Garland of Atlanta, GA; and nieces and nephews, Clara Harris, Peggy Nicholson, Cheryl Caskiet, Patsy and Bennie Messer, Ellen and Leonard Hunter, William Cantrell, Tommy Cantrell, Donnie and Martha Foster, and Kenneth Foster; .

Funeral services were conducted on Thursday, January 5, 2017, at 12:00 pm from Akins Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Delmar Davenport and Rev. Scott Baugh officiating.  Interment followed in the Ensley Family Cemetery.  Pallbearers were  Chris Queen, Jeff Queen, Terry Harris, Barry Harris, Jamie Cantrell, Larry Nicholson, Robbie Russell, and Cheryl Hennig.  Honorary pallbearers  Kenny Queen, Mann Patterson, Benny Ensley, and Rev. Philip E. Sowell

After a protracted battle with cancer, Philip E. Sowell died in his home surrounded by his loving family December 24, 2016 in Cherry Log, Georgia. He leaves behind the love of his life, his wife, Sandy Sowell, his son Greg Sowell, brothers James, Elmo and Bob. Phil was born February 14, 1944 in Atlanta, Georgia to William and Mary Sowell who predeceased him. Phil was a driven professional who was in the forefront in software design for niche markets. After his company was sold Phil moved to the mountains and enjoyed all his many projects and walking in the mountains he loved. Phil was a brave iron-willed man who was called a warrior by his loving son, Greg. His bravery in battling his terrible disease was awe inspiring. We all should wish to be as brave as he.

Grace Willene Miller

Grace Willene Miller, age 88, of Blue Ridge, passed away on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at her home. Born on April 28, 1928 in Fannin County, she was the daughter of the late John Edgar Panter and Margie Leanna Turner Panter. She was one of eleven children. She was a member of Harmony Baptist Church. She worked as a Secretary for Nationwide Insurance. She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Duard Panter, Kenneth R. Panter, and Clifford Panter; and sisters, Edna Earle Panter, Dorothy S. Tarpley, and Ruby Panter Hendon.

She is survived by sister, Wanda Jean Panter of Blue Ridge; brothers, James E. Panter of Canton, OH, Lloyd Lavelle Panter of Douglasville, GA, and Dale Panter of Blue Ridge; sister-in-law, Joyce Panter of Blue Ridge; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted on Thursday, December 15, 2016 at 4:00 p.m. from the Akins Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Terry Thrasher officiating. Music was provided by Imogene Stewart. Interment followed in the Chastain Memorial Park Cemetery. Truman A. Tipton

Truman A. Tipton, age 71, of Morganton passed away on Friday, December 16, 2016 in Chattanooga, TN. Born on April 24, 1945 in Morganton, he was the son of the late Fred and Florence Head Tipton. He was of the Christian faith. He worked as a Real Estate Developer. He is preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Julie Tipton and Mitchell and Dana Tipton, all of Morganton; grandchildren, Wiley Tipton, Shea Tipton, and Lacey Tipton, Willie Baldwin; and several siblings.

Graveside services were held on Sunday, December 18, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Concord Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Daniel Postell officiating. Music was provided by Bart Turner. Frances Annie Bell “Penny” Thomas Presley

Frances Annie Bell “Penny” Thomas Presley, age 72, of Morganton, GA passed away Monday, December 12, 2016 in the Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga. TN.  Ms. Presley was born in Blairsville, GA on July 26, 1944 to the late Dennis Thomas and Laura Tilson Thomas.  She was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, C.J. Thomas, Junior Thomas, William Thomas, Janie Allen, Louise Allen, Stella Mae Kincaid, and Cora Bell Thomas.

She is survived by a son, Brad Beaver of Morganton; daughter, Lisa Davis of Temple, GA; sisters. Rose Allen of Morganton, Vonnie York of Texas, and Hattie Marie Gazaway of Morganton; grandchildren, Leighann Shaw. Bradley Beaver. Taylor Davis, Tabitha Davis, and Marla Beaver; and 4 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Thursday, December 15, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. from the Akins of Blue Ridge Chapel with Rev. Eric Davenport and Rev. Jesse Floyd Postell

Jesse Floyd Postell, age 88 of Epworth GA passed away Sunday, December 11, 2016 at the Fannin Regional Hospital.   Mr. Postell was born on February 5, 1928 in Fannin County to the late John McKinley Postell and Althea Jane McArthur Postell. He was a self-employed farmer.  Mr. Postell was a member of Helping Hand Fellowship Community Church.  He was preceded in death by his wife, of seventy years, Lucy Jane Watson Postell, who passed away on October 9, 2016 and grandchildren, Jesse and Matthew Pope and great-grandchild, Dillon Davis.

Survivors are daughters and sons-in-law, Althea and Jim Davenport of Blue Ridge, Ellen and Donnie Pope, Carol and George Watkins and Brenda and Dusty Patterson;  son and daughter-in-law, Arnold and Sue Postell and son, David Postell all of Epworth; brothers, Bill Postell of Blue Ridge and Burlin Postell of Dalton; seventeen grandchildren; thirty-six great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren also survive.

Sylvia Jean Holt

Sylvia Jean Holt, age 78, of Morganton, passed away Saturday, December 3, 2016 at her home. She was born in Rabun County, GA, on January 17, 1938 to the late Lee and Mary Ledford Williams. She was a loving mother to her children. She worked in Public Records for 21 years at Wells Fargo Bank.

She is survived by children, Johnny Holt and wife Becky, Tim Holt, and Pamela Tolley and husband Kenny; brothers, David Williams, Doyle Williams, Leon Williams, Lindsey Williams, and Ralph Williams; sister, Marlene Williams; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mrs. Belle Moore Mathis

Mrs. Belle Moore Mathis, age 91, of Epworth, GA passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter November 26, 2016. She was born May 1, 1925 in Fannin County, GA to the late David Fred Moore and Minnie Ditmore Moore. She was also preceded in death by husband, Gordon Willard Mathis, Sr., and brother, Claude Fred Moore, Jr.

Belle was a longtime member of Lebanon Baptist Church and was active in the Woman’s Missionary Union, helped in the bereavement food ministry, and sang in the choir for many years. She loved her Lord, loved people, and loved to sing and cook. She sold Avon in the community for over thirty years.
She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Rev. Al Patterson of Epworth, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Rev. G.W. and Lynda Mathis of Copperhill, TN; and son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Claude and Kathi Mathis of Blue Ridge, GA. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren: Tammy Bonilla, Alice Payne, Kim Worley, Chris Patterson, Enoch Patterson, Monica Clark, Kelly Brown, David Mathis, Ginger Hughes, Rev. Scotty Mathis, Candy Taylor, and Lynn Franklin; thirty-one great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services: Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Lebanon Baptist Church, Epworth, GA, with Rev. Claude Mathis, Rev. Al Patterson, and Rev. Scotty Mathis officiating. Chris Patterson, David Mathis, Rev. Scotty Mathis, Rev. Al Patterson, Rev. G.W. Mathis, and Rev. Claude Mathis served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers: Jack Mathis, Junior Mathis, and the deacons of Lebanon Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Thomas Glen Turner, Jr.
Mr. Thomas Glen Turner, Jr. age 70 of Blue Ridge, passed away November 26, 2016 at his residence. Mr. Turner was born May 15, 1946 to the late Thomas Glen Turner Sr. and the late Hazel Williams Turner. He was preceded in death by . He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He worked as a manager for the Tri-State Concrete Co. until his retirement in 2014.

Survivors include: daughter, Jennifer (Robbie) Thompson and granddaughter, Elle Thompson, all of Columbus, GA, as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, hunting and golf buddies, and many other friends and family.

Funeral services: Thursday, December 1, 2016 at 11:00 am at the Finch-Cochran Funeral Home with the Rev. Bo Bulloch officiating. Music provided by: Vicky Sparks Whittenbarger. Interment will follow in the Epworth First Baptist Church Cemetery. Military Honors provided by the North Georgia Honor Guard. George Beach, Jr.
George Beach, Jr., age 87, of Blue Ridge, passed away on Friday, November 25, 2016 at Pruitt Health Care in Blue Ridge. Born on February 9, 1929, he is the son of the late George Washington Beach and Era Mae Panter Beach. He served as a Deacon at Damascus Baptist Church for 40 years. He was Past Master at McCay Lodge #423 F&AM. As a young man, he worked several years for Abernathy’s Home Furnishings, later worked many years as a Mechanic. Before retiring, he returned to Abernathy’s Home Furnishings working in Repair and Deliveries.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Carol Stiles Beach of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, Ricky G. and Glenda Beach and Randy C. and Pam Beach of Blue Ridge; daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Chris Hendon of Ellijay; brother and sister-in-law, James and Betty Beach of Blue Ridge; sisters, Dorothy Carroll of Blue Ridge, Martha Jean Loving of Blue Ridge, Loravee V. Anderson of Marietta, and Rose Russell of Epworth; grandchildren, Logan Hendon, Eric Beach and wife Tina, Angela Yohn and husband Chris, Michael Beach and wife Taylor, and April Hedden and husband Jeremy; great-grandchildren, Trinity Yohn, Trenton Yohn, Parker Beach, Olivia Beach, Caylie Hedden Graham, Kenslie Hedden, Reagan Hedden, Ethan Hedden, Channing Beach, Brentlie Beach, Zachary Beach, Madden Beach, Jerzee Beach, Georgia Reeves Beach, and Kimber Lynn Beach; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Clara Marlene German
Clara Marlene German, age 80 of McCaysville, passed away November 24, 2016 at Life Care Center of Copper Basin. Mrs. German was born February 22, 1936 in Blue Ridge, GA to the late William Leonard Dilbeck and the late Bessie Marie Davis Dilbeck. She was preceded in death by her sisters, JoAnn Dilbeck and Patsy Dilbeck Sparks, and her brother, Jackie Dilbeck. She attended Bethel church.

Survivors include: daughters, Nora Elizabeth Edge, of McCaysville, GA, Alisa Susan (Ken) Sewell, of Petal, MS, grandchildren, Nicole Elizabeth Edge, of Melbourne, FL, and Blaine, Jenna, and Jared Sewell, of Petal, MS, sisters, Brenda L. Mrs. Ruth Johnson Henson
Mrs. Ruth Johnson Henson, age 81, of Blue Ridge passed away Thursday, November  24, 2016 at her home following an extended illness.  Born in Pickens County, GA, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Victoria Cox Johnson.  She enjoyed growing flowers and gardening and was a member of the Cattlemen’s Association.  Mrs. Henson was also a long time member of the Sugar Creek Baptist Church.  Also preceding her in death was her husband, James Hobert Henson; and two siblings, Edith Johnson Henry and Harold Johnson.
Survivors include her two sons and daughters-in-law, Stanley and Angie Henson of Blue Ridge, GA and Greg Henson of Canton, GA; grandchildren, Wyatt Henson, Hunter Henson and Jamie Henson; brother and sister-in-law, Phillip and Kay Johnson of Talking Rock, GA; sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Don Bloodworth of Suches, GA; and one sister-in-law, Linda Johnson of Jasper, GA.
Funeral Services will be conducted on Sunday, November 27, 2016 at 3:
00 p.m. from the Akins Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Larry Williams and Rev. Rachel Mae Turner

Rachel Mae Turner, age 71, of Ooltewah, TN, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, November 14, 2016 at a local hospital. She was born in Fannin County on March 31, 1945, to the late Julius and Blanche Panter. She worked for Gem Products and Sears Service Center. She was of the Baptist faith. She is preceded in death by her son, Donald Gregory Turner; brother, Bob Panter; and sister, Judy Allen.

She is survived by daughter, Becky Montieth of Chattanooga, TN; daughter and son-in-law, Crystal and Gene Charles Godsey of Ringgold, GA; brothers, Wallace Panter and Sam Panter; sisters, Betty Byers and Velma Hughes; grandchildren, Seth (Abby) Medley, Whitney (Josh) Shirley, Ryan (Alexis) Turner, Ashlee Turner, Chase Turner, Andrew Godsey, Morgan Montieth, and Kaylee Godsey; and great-grandson, Aiden Shirley.

Funeral services were conducted on Thursday, November 17, 2016 at 1:00PM from the Akins Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Robert Schrader officiaing. Music was provided by James Williams. Mrs. Fay Oleta Shields Weaver

Mrs. Fay Oleta Shields Weaver, age 84, of College Park, GA passed away on Saturday, November 12, 2016 at her home. She was born in Hot House, NC on June 23, 1932, to the late Harley Shields and Lowneys Fox Shields. She retired as an Insurance Agent for Weaver Insurance Agency and was a member of Harmony Baptist Church. She is preceded in death by her husband, Marion Cecil Weaver and brother, Roy Harley Shields.

She is survived son and daughter-in-law, James and Diana Weaver of Ellijay; daughters and sons-in-law, Angela and James McEachern of Fayetteville, GA and Deborah and Larry Dyer of Morganton; sister, Helen Mae Arp of Knoxville, TN; sister-in-law, Mattie Shields; and ten grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and eleven great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted on Friday, November 18, 2016 at 11:00 am from the Akins Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Delmar Davenport officiating. Interment follow in the Chastain Memorial Park Cemetery. The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: James Weaver, Larry Dyer, James McEachern, Luke McEachern, and Chris Brown. Lena McKinnon

Lena McKinnon, age 90, of Ellijay, GA, passed away on Friday, November 4, 2016 in Ellijay. She was born on February 14, 1926 to the late Nicholas Lapola and Mary Meara Lapola in Philadelphia, PA. She is a member of Good Samaritan Catholic Church in Ellijay. She is preceded in death by her parents and husband, John E. McKinnon.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Larry Pierce and wife Victoria of Blue Ridge and Joseph Frank Pierce, Jr. and wife Cindy of Ducktown; and four grandchildren.
